About

Floating Key operates as a community initiative seeking to unite Black people with people of color, under the spirit of uplifting one another and elevating our people. The ultimate goal of Floating Key is to generate a community of people who will actively work together in creating art and disruption within whiteness. Floating Key is run by people of color, for people of color, and does so unapologetically. We work to elevate one another and provide platforms for visibility and social reform. Floating Key will host recurring events and actions, and is open to the contribution of those who find purpose in continuing the initiative. The second and third installments will be a series of club nights and lectures to generate further unity and understanding within our community. This initiative prioritizes Black, queer, trans, intersex, and disabled people of color, seeking to establish more nuanced dialogue within our communities.

FOUNDER

China Aleisse (1991) is a Black American, queer woman, who came to Naarm at the end of 2014. Born in Detroit, Michigan, to working class parents, her priority and purpose in life has been to elevate and connect marginalized voices. Her time here has served as an urgent reminder that the imminent threat of Black visibility and resurgence transcends geographical borders, and can only be remedied through mediated efforts to elevate global blackness. Her experience as a writer and events producer has allowed for the development of strategic community engagement, which sets to reposition Black identities as the dominant thread of creative and innovative thought.
